The objective is to support the strengthening of local action plans for bioeconomy, and will focus on marine and marine bio-based products.

Technologies solutions, innovative ideas, and challenges within the context of marine bio-based economy will be presented. There will also be a focus on research actions for a plastic-free Mediterranean Sea.

The oceans absorb around 30% of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere as a result of human activities.

It seems that the different carbon levels are measured in different depths. And the waters’ ability to absorb carbon depends on the temperature differences. As CO2 dissolves in seawaters it forms carbonic acid, decreasing the ocean’s pH. This is called ocean acidification. 50% of marine life is expected to be affected by ocean acidification. Its impact is now visible on coastal protection; ocean acidification weakens coral reefs shielding the coast line – another good reason to decrease CO2 emissions.

The event brought together stakeholders to debate and shape the future research and innovation landscape. EU Commission is pushing for innovative projects that could respond to the climate crisis and help protect Europe’s unique eco-system and bio-diversity. Given the urgency of the challenges discerning results in the short and medium term are waited. More targeted larger and visible actions with rapid scalability are expected from researchers. Sea Green Engineering is ready to take up the challenge.
