A major milestone has been reached in the European WHISPER energy project with the successful completion of the OceanWings retrofit aboard the 60,000 DWT bulk carrier Maria Topic, which has now returned to commercial service.

Sea Green Engineering supported the project as engineering subcontractor to Ant. Topic s.r.l., providing engineering expertise for the integration of the OceanWings rigid wind sail and a hybrid battery container onboard the vessel.

Our scope covered structural integration, stability assessment, systems integration, manoeuvrability analysis and the updating of ship documentation affected by the installation. Sea Green Engineering also carried out the lightship weight survey and inclining test at the Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. shipyard in Japan.

The Maria Topic demonstrates how wind-assisted propulsion, energy storage and solar power technologies can be combined onboard large commercial vessels to support the transition towards more sustainable and energy-efficient shipping.

We would like to congratulate and thank Ant. Topic s.r.l., OceanWings, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., the Maria Topic crew, Lloyd’s Register and all the teams involved in delivering this project.

Sea Green Engineering is proud to have contributed to this important milestone within the WHISPER energy project, supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme.
